Social work education was first initiated at the University of Minnesota in 1917 via the Training Course for Social and Civic Work program within the department of sociology. The program consisted of five years of course work, resulting in a Master's degree, with the first awarded to Mary Agnes Meier in 1918. George Hoshino was born on November 22, 1919 in Pendleton, Oregon. He earned his M.A. degree in 1954 from the University of Chicago and his D.S.W. in 1960 from the University of Pennsylvania. From 1948-1951, he served as a welfare officer for the Civil Affairs Section of the U.S. Army in Tokyo, Japan.
